Welcome to the home of the Friendly Grinches where learning is FUN!
Our Park Street School motto is WORK HARD and BE FRIENDLY.
We have had a wonderful fall in first grade. We began our year learning and working together as a community. For November and December our whole school theme is Diversity/Respect. We have many terrific classroom books that we read and discuss about people and their differences.
During December we will be studying the diverse celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.
Earlier this fall, we studied mammals and now we know why these animals are called mammals:
They have fur or hair, babies are born alive, babies get milk from the mother, they have highly developed brains, they are warm blooded, breathe air with lungs, and may live on land or in water. Mr. Gary Peltin, a wildlife biologist from the US Corps of Engineers, brought in real stuffed mammals that are native to Vermont. We learned many interesting facts about bobcats, weasels, raccoons, otters, and other mammals.
We have adopted a beautiful maple tree as our Class Tree, located near the Springfield Hospital. We will be visiting the tree throughout the year recording changes and writing about this very special tree.
The class also has Fourth Grade Buddies from Ms. Reck’s class. Their class is known as Reck's Rockers. We spend an afternoon together every other week doing all kinds of fun activities. We made patterns, geometric shapes, and designs using our math pattern blocks.
